Happy 4th of July!

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Epic offers a special salute to all that enjoy a quality jaunt on their mountain bike, commute to work by bike, maintain the trails, and those that support the economy by buying and tuning at their local bike shop.

We're a little biased, but it's quite possible that one of the best ways to be a patriot is to ride a bike.

Susan Haywood

Stan's NoTubes

For those that still need an extra nudge to get on the Stan's No Tubes wagon, here are words of wisdom from the indomitable Susan Haywood - Stan's No Tubes elite racer and personal coach.

"I use Stan's No Tubes for two reasons. One: It improves my ride quality because I can ride lower air pressure in my tires. Two: It has the capacity to seal tire punctures while riding. That is a product that makes my biking life better."

Trailside with the President of T.R.A.C.K.S.

Epic Rides caught up with Nick, president of TRACKS, to find out the secret recipe behind the wild success of The White Mountains Trail System - 200 glorious miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, equestrians and cross country skiers in the Apache-Sitgreaves.

"TRACKS volunteers are a community. Nearly 400 strong, we build and maintain the WMTS. Major trails are built as loops with connectors, for short or long excursions. Membership in TRACKS is free and includes a free monthly newsletter with a calendar of activities. There are email lists for those interested in group hikes, mountain bike rides, cross country skiing and trail maintenance.

Come join a community group that makes a significant difference in the White Mountains!"

Fire Road Cedar City

Events Near and Far -
Fire Road Cedar City

Multisports.com and Cedar City, UT are hosting their 2nd annual Fire Road Cedar City on Saturday, July 7th.

The event will include something for everyone with fully supported 25 km, 60 km, and 100 km courses. Fire Road Cycling opens off-road riding to every level of cycling enthusiast.

The 100 km course features over 7500' of climbing with vistas of Kolob Canyon, Zion National Park, Brian Head & Cedar Breaks before descending back down to Cedar City. The 60 km course has a total elevation gain of almost 5000' and includes the same ascent of Kanarra Mountain Road (over 3000' in 8 miles) that the 100km riders climb. Novices will appreciate the gentle terrain of the 25 km course that will include the same neutral roll-out on Main Street but skip the big climb for a tour of the west side's trails to the finish line at Main Street Park where the expo, awards, post-race food, and other festivities await.

Entry fees range from $45 to $85 until July 1st. Click here to register online, or get your mail-in entry form here.

Breckenridge 100

Scheduled for July 15th, registration is still open for the Breckenridge 100 Mountain Bike Challenge, part of the National Ultra Endurance Series. If a rider is not up for the whole enchilada, shorter distance races like the B32 and B68 are also available, as are team competitions which allow racers of intermediate abilities to still taste the same epic terrain as the elite competitors.

Pinetop-Lakeside factoid:

Some early settlers were in favor of calling the town Penrod. William Penrod owned the local mule-powered shingle mill.

Past Tour participants, Show Low Bluff home owners, and White Mountain residents may recognize Williams 'consolation prize', Penrod Rd.

New Belgium's Shift

You already know that New Belgium Brewing has great beer. Did you know that NBB's Shift, part of their Explore Series, could be the perfect summer adult bevie? Crack this pale lager after your next long and dusty ride and see for yourself.
